heirloom tomatoesA couple of months ago, I was in my local Whole Foods shopping for groceries. I was feeling in the mood to chow down on some heirloom tomatoes. Every once in a while I like to splurge a little and go for the more expensive kind. I was shocked to see the lofty price tage of $5.99 a pound. Despite the high price, I went and bought a few for a truly awesome salad. Heirloom tomatoes, like their name suggests, are like “pure bred”….or in other words, the seeds that you get will grow into the identical plants and bear the identical type of tomatoes.

Mostly for the sake of amusing myself, I went and saved some of the seeds from those delectable tomatoes, and put them in a put to grow. I went to the local Home Depot to buy some quality organic soil, and in about two months time I now have gigantic heirloom tomato plants with small fruit already starting to grow. I’ll keep everyone posted on how my plants are doing and when it is time to harvest the crop. It’s been fun watching them grow, and with some luck will have also saved a lot of money on my own organic heirloom tomatoes!
